About Us
Explore the history of a thriving Indigenous community that lived along the shores of Lake Mitchell more than 1,000 years ago. The Mitchell Indigenous Archaeological Site, a National Historic Landmark, brings together archaeological research, preservation, and public education to connect visitors with the Indigenous heritage of the Great Plains.
Visit the Boehnen Memorial Museum and Thomsen Center Archeodome to discover artifacts, explore exhibits, and look into an active archaeological excavation. Learn how villagers built their homes, grew food, developed technologies, and participated in networks of trade and exchange. Discover the site’s connections to the ancestors of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara peoples, whose communities and cultural traditions continue today.
We welcome families, school groups, and curious visitors of all ages. Through educational programs, community events, and ongoing research, we make the site a place for discovery, conversation, and lifelong learning.
